- 6.1अनाश्रितः कर्मफलं कार्यं कर्म करोति यः ।True renunciation is not about escaping work, but about acting without clinging to results.
- 6.2यं संन्यासमिति प्राहुर्योगं तं विद्धि पाण्डव ।Yoga and renunciation point to the same inward release from selfish intention.
- 6.3आरुरुक्षोर्मुनेर्योगं कर्म कारणमुच्यते ।At first, disciplined action helps us rise; later, calmness helps us stay established.
- 6.4यदा हि नेन्द्रियार्थेषु न कर्मस्वनुषज्जते ।A person rises in yoga when both outer attachment and inner planning loosen their hold.
- 6.5उद्धरेदात्मनात्मानं नात्मानमवसादयेत् ।Your own choices can either elevate you or pull you down.
- 6.6बन्धुरात्मात्मनस्तस्य येनात्मैवात्मना जितः ।Self-mastery makes life supportive, while inner disorder turns the mind against us.
- 6.7जितात्मनः प्रशान्तस्य परमात्मा समाहितः ।The mastered person stays steady through opposite experiences and rests in a deeper center.
- 6.8ज्ञानविज्ञानतृप्तात्मा कूटस्थो विजितेन्द्रियः ।A wise person is no longer ruled by material value judgments or outward appearances.
- 6.9सुहृन्मित्रार्युदासीनमध्यस्थद्वेष्यबन्धुषु ।The highest yogi sees all people with equal steadiness instead of being pulled around by personal bias.
- 6.10योगी युञ्जीत सततमात्मानं रहसि स्थितः ।A sincere practitioner needs solitude, discipline, and freedom from craving to settle inwardly.
- 6.11शुचौ देशे प्रतिष्ठाप्य स्थिरमासनमात्मनः ।Practice should take place in a simple, stable, and clean environment that supports concentration.
- 6.12तत्रैकाग्रं मनः कृत्वा यतचित्तेन्द्रियक्रियः ।Meditation is the disciplined gathering of attention for the purpose of inner cleansing.
- 6.13समं कायशिरोग्रीवं धारयन्नचलं स्थिरः ।The body is held steady so the mind can become steady too.
- 6.14प्रशान्तात्मा विगतभीर्ब्रह्मचारिव्रते स्थितः ।The meditative life is built on peace, self-restraint, fearlessness, and devotion.
- 6.15युञ्जन्नेवं सदात्मानं योगी नियतमानसः ।Steady practice leads to deep peace and a settled presence in the Divine.
- 6.16नात्यश्नतस्तु योगोऽस्ति न चैकान्तमनश्नतः ।Balance in ordinary habits is necessary for real inner practice.
- 6.17युक्ताहारविहारस्य युक्तचेष्टस्य कर्मसु ।A balanced life makes spiritual practice sustainable and healing.
- 6.18यदा विनियतं चित्तमात्मन्येवावतिष्ठते ।Yoga is reached when the mind is quiet, centered, and free from craving.
- 6.19यथा दीपो निवातस्थो नेङ्गते सोपमा स्मृता ।A steady mind in meditation is like a lamp protected from the wind.
- 6.20यत्रोपरमते चित्तं निरुद्धं योगसेवया ।Deep meditation turns awareness inward until the person finds fulfillment in the self alone.
- 6.21सुखमात्यन्तिकं यत्तद् बुद्धिग्राह्यमतीन्द्रियम् ।There is a higher happiness beyond the senses that gives a person lasting stability.
- 6.22यं लब्ध्वा चापरं लाभं मन्यते नाधिकं ततः ।Once this deeper peace is found, ordinary loss no longer has the same power to disturb.
- 6.23तं विद्याद् दुःखसंयोगवियोगं योगसंज्ञितम् ।Yoga is the state that frees a person from being bound to suffering.
- 6.24सङ्कल्पप्रभवान्कामांस्त्यक्त्वा सर्वानशेषतः ।The seeker must let go of self-generated desires and gather the senses under mental discipline.
- 6.25शनैः शनैरुपरमेद् बुद्ध्या धृतिगृहीतया ।Progress in meditation is slow and steady, not forced all at once.
- 6.26यतो यतो निश्चरति मनश्चञ्चलमस्थिरम् ।Whenever the mind drifts, it must be calmly brought back.
- 6.27प्रशान्तमनसं ह्येनं योगिनं सुखमुत्तमम् ।A purified and quiet mind naturally opens to the deepest peace.
- 6.28युञ्जन्नेवं सदात्मानं योगी विगतकल्मषः ।Consistent practice allows a person to taste a deep and boundless joy.
- 6.29सर्वभूतस्थमात्मानं सर्वभूतानि चात्मनि ।True yoga reveals a shared inner reality that connects all beings.
- 6.30यो मां पश्यति सर्वत्र सर्वं च मयि पश्यति ।When God is seen as present everywhere, the relationship between seeker and Divine becomes continuous.
- 6.31सर्वभूतस्थितं यो मां भजत्येकत्वमास्थितः ।Seeing the Divine in all beings keeps the yogi inwardly close to God in every situation.
- 6.32आत्मौपम्येन सर्वत्र समं पश्यति योऽर्जुन ।The greatest yogi keeps the same steady eye on the joys and sorrows of all beings.
- 6.33योऽयं योगस्त्वया प्रोक्तः साम्येन मधुसूदन ।Arjuna admits that the teaching is beautiful, but he cannot yet imagine living it steadily.
- 6.34चञ्चलं हि मनः कृष्ण प्रमाथि बलवद् दृढम् ।Arjuna feels the mind is powerful and hard to govern.
- 6.35असंशयं महाबाहो मनो दुर्निग्रहं चलम् ।Krishna agrees the mind is hard to master, but says it can be trained through repeated effort and letting go.
- 6.36असंयतात्मना योगो दुष्प्राप इति मे मतिः ।Without discipline yoga stays difficult, but with discipline it becomes attainable.
- 6.37अयतिः श्रद्धयोपेतो योगाच्चलितमानसः ।Arjuna asks about a sincere seeker who falls short before completion.
- 6.38कच्चिन्नोभयविभ्रष्टश्छिन्नाभ्रमिव नश्यति ।Arjuna worries that such a seeker may lose everything and be left with nothing.
- 6.39एतन्मे संशयं कृष्ण छेत्तुमर्हस्यशेषतः ।Arjuna turns to Krishna as the only one who can answer the question fully.
- 6.40पार्थ नैवेह नामुत्र विनाशस्तस्य विद्यते ।Sincere spiritual effort is never wasted and never ends in loss.
- 6.41प्राप्य पुण्यकृतां लोकानुषित्वा शाश्वतीः समाः ।A seeker who falls short still continues on a favorable path and gets another good beginning.
- 6.42अथवा योगिनामेव कुले भवति धीमताम् ।Another possibility is a rebirth in a family that naturally supports spiritual growth.
- 6.43तत्र तं बुद्धिसंयोगं लभते पौर्वदेहिकम् ।Past practice returns as memory and makes further progress easier.
- 6.44पूर्वाभ्यासेन तेनैव ह्रियते ह्यवशोऽपि सः ।Old practice keeps working and carries the person forward, even across resistance or delay.
- 6.45प्रयत्नाद्यतमानस्तु योगी संशुद्धकिल्बिषः ।Steady practice over time eventually leads to complete realization.
- 6.46तपस्विभ्योऽधिको योगी ज्ञानिभ्योऽपि मतोऽधिकः ।Yoga is presented as the highest and most complete way of life.
- 6.47योगिनामपि सर्वेषां मद्गतेनान्तरात्मना ।The deepest yogi is the one whose devotion is steady, wholehearted, and centered on Krishna.
