- 5.1संन्यासं कर्मणां कृष्ण पुनर्योगं च शंससि ।Arjuna is asking whether he should give up action completely or follow the path of action with discipline.
- 5.2संन्यासः कर्मयोगश्च निःश्रेयसकरावुभौ ।Krishna says both paths can lead upward, but disciplined action is the more practical and effective one.
- 5.3ज्ञेयः स नित्यसंन्यासी यो न द्वेष्टि न काङ्क्षति ।A real renunciate is not defined by outer form, but by freedom from liking, disliking, and inner conflict.
- 5.4साङ्ख्ययोगौ पृथग्बालाः प्रवदन्ति न पण्डिताः ।The wise do not divide truth into competing camps, because both paths lead to the same realization when followed correctly.
- 5.5यत्साङ्ख्यैः प्राप्यते स्थानं तद्योगैरपि गम्यते ।Both paths can lead to the same spiritual destination when they are understood deeply.
- 5.6संन्यासस्तु महाबाहो दुःखमाप्तुमयोगतः ।Without inner discipline, renunciation becomes difficult; with yoga, the higher state comes more naturally.
- 5.7योगयुक्तो विशुद्धात्मा विजितात्मा जितेन्द्रियः ।A purified and self-controlled person can act in the world without becoming trapped by action.
- 5.8नैव किञ्चित्करोमीति युक्तो मन्येत तत्त्ववित् ।The wise know that the senses are active, but the deeper self is not the doer in the ordinary sense.
- 5.9प्रलपन्विसृजन्गृह्णन्नुन्मिषन्निमिषन्नपि ।Even while ordinary actions continue, the realized person sees that only the senses are operating on their objects.
- 5.10ब्रह्मण्याधाय कर्माणि सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा करोति यः ।When action is offered without selfish attachment, it does not stain the person who performs it.
- 5.11कायेन मनसा बुद्ध्या केवलैरिन्द्रियैरपि ।Spiritual action involves the whole person, but it is done as a practice of inner cleansing rather than personal gain.
- 5.12युक्तः कर्मफलं त्यक्त्वा शान्तिमाप्नोति नैष्ठिकीम् ।Letting go of results brings peace, while craving outcomes keeps a person bound.
- 5.13सर्वकर्माणि मनसा संन्यस्यास्ते सुखं वशी ।The wise can live in the body and world without a deep sense of ownership over every movement.
- 5.14न कर्तृत्वं न कर्माणि लोकस्य सृजति प्रभुः ।Doership and results belong to nature and its processes, not to God as a personal manipulator.
- 5.15नादत्ते कस्यचित्पापं न चैव सुकृतं विभुः ।God is not morally contaminated by human action; ignorance is what hides the truth from beings.
- 5.16ज्ञानेन तु तदज्ञानं येषां नाशितमात्मनः ।When ignorance falls away, knowledge shines clearly and shows what is real.
- 5.17तद्बुद्धयस्तदात्मानस्तन्निष्ठास्तत्परायणाः ।A mind fully oriented toward the Supreme reaches a state beyond return and is purified by insight.
- 5.18विद्याविनयसम्पन्ने ब्राह्मणे गवि हस्तिनि ।The enlightened person sees the same divine presence in all beings, beyond social rank or outer form.
- 5.19इहैव तैर्जितः सर्गो येषां साम्ये स्थितं मनः ।A mind that remains even and unbiased has already risen above the ordinary cycle of bondage.
- 5.20न प्रहृष्येत्प्रियं प्राप्य नोद्विजेत्प्राप्य चाप्रियम् ।The wise do not get carried away by gain or crushed by loss.
- 5.21बाह्यस्पर्शेष्वसक्तात्मा विन्दत्यात्मनि यत्सुखम् ।Deep happiness comes from within, not from sensory stimulation or outer contact.
- 5.22ये हि संस्पर्शजा भोगा दुःखयोनय एव ते ।Sense pleasures are temporary and unstable, so the wise do not lean on them for lasting fulfillment.
- 5.23शक्नोतीहैव यः सोढुं प्राक्शरीरविमोक्षणात् ।The one who can withstand inner impulses like desire and anger becomes truly strong and inwardly peaceful.
- 5.24योऽन्तःसुखोऽन्तरारामस्तथान्तर्ज्योतिरेव यः ।Spiritual fulfillment comes from inner fullness, not from dependence on the outer world.
- 5.25लभन्ते ब्रह्मनिर्वाणमृषयः क्षीणकल्मषाः ।Purified, clear, and compassionate people naturally move toward liberation.
- 5.26कामक्रोधवियुक्तानां यतीनां यतचेतसाम् ।When desire and anger fall away, liberation becomes very close.
- 5.27स्पर्शान्कृत्वा बहिर्बाह्यांश्चक्षुश्चैवान्तरे भ्रुवोः ।The verse describes a disciplined inner practice that gathers the senses and breath for concentration.
- 5.28यतेन्द्रियमनोबुद्धिर्मुनिर्मोक्षपरायणः ।A person who has fully trained the inner instruments becomes truly free from bondage.
- 5.29भोक्तारं यज्ञतपसां सर्वलोकमहेश्वरम् ।When the Divine is seen as the true beneficiary and friend of all, the mind settles into peace.
