Chapter 13

Kṣetra Kṣetrajña Vibhāga Yoga

  1. 13.1प्रकृतिं पुरुषं चैव क्षेत्रं क्षेत्रज्ञमेव च ।Arjuna asks Krishna to explain the basic structure of reality, the body, the soul, knowledge, and the knowable.
  2. 13.2इदं शरीरं कौन्तेय क्षेत्रमित्यभिधीयते ।Krishna identifies the body as the field and the conscious witness as the knower.
  3. 13.3क्षेत्रज्ञं चापि मां विद्धि सर्वक्षेत्रेषु भारत ।Krishna says He is the witness present in every field, and this understanding is real knowledge.
  4. 13.4तत्क्षेत्रं यच्च यादृक्च यद्विकारि यतश्च यत् ।Krishna now explains the nature of the body-field and the consciousness within it.
  5. 13.5ऋषिभिर्बहुधा गीतं छन्दोभिर्विविधैः पृथक् ।Krishna says the sages and scriptures have long described this truth in different ways.
  6. 13.6महाभूतान्यहंकारो बुद्धिरव्यक्तमेव च ।Krishna lists the components that make up the field of embodied life.
  7. 13.7इच्छा द्वेषः सुखं दुःखं संघातश्चेतना धृतिः ।The field also includes emotions, feelings, and steadiness or instability.
  8. 13.8अमानित्वमदम्भित्वमहिंसा क्षान्तिरार्जवम् ।Knowledge begins with humility, purity, patience, and respect for guidance.
  9. 13.9इन्द्रियार्थेषु वैराग्यमनहंकार एव च ।A seeker must also learn restraint and honest awareness of life’s suffering.
  10. 13.10असक्तिरनभिष्वङ्गः पुत्रदारगृहादिषु ।The wise do not cling blindly to people or possessions, and they remain balanced through change.
  11. 13.11मयि चानन्ययोगेन भक्तिरव्यभिचारिणी ।The seeker prefers devoted solitude and steady remembrance.
  12. 13.12अध्यात्मज्ञाननित्यत्वं तत्त्वज्ञानार्थदर्शनम् ।Real knowledge means staying close to truth and seeing clearly what is not truth.
  13. 13.13ज्ञेयं यत्तत्प्रवक्ष्यामि यज्ज्ञात्वामृतमश्नुते ।Krishna introduces the ultimate reality that leads beyond death and confusion.
  14. 13.14सर्वतः पाणिपादं तत्सर्वतोऽक्षिशिरोमुखम् ।The Divine is all-pervading and present everywhere.
  15. 13.15सर्वेन्द्रियगुणाभासं सर्वेन्द्रियविवर्जितम् ।The supreme reality is beyond the senses and qualities, yet sustains everything.
  16. 13.16बहिरन्तश्च भूतानामचरं चरमेव च ।The Divine is both distant and intimate, hidden and near.
  17. 13.17अविभक्तं च भूतेषु विभक्तमिव च स्थितम् ।The one reality appears in many forms while remaining one.
  18. 13.18ज्योतिषामपि तज्ज्योतिस्तमसः परमुच्यते ।The Divine is the inner light and final goal of knowing.
  19. 13.19इति क्षेत्रं तथा ज्ञानं ज्ञेयं चोक्तं समासतः ।Krishna summarizes the chapter and says this understanding leads one closer to Him.
  20. 13.20प्रकृतिं पुरुषं चैव विद्ध्यनादी उभावपि ।Krishna says both nature and spirit are beginningless, along with the changes that arise from nature.
  21. 13.21कार्यकारणकर्तृत्वे हेतुः प्रकृतिरुच्यते ।Nature produces action, while consciousness experiences its results.
  22. 13.22पुरुषः प्रकृतिस्थो हि भुङ्क्ते प्रकृतिजान्गुणान् ।When consciousness identifies with nature’s qualities, it gets bound to repeated birth.
  23. 13.23उपद्रष्टानुमन्ता च भर्ता भोक्ता महेश्वरः ।The indwelling Divine is the witness and ruler of embodied life.
  24. 13.24य एवं वेत्ति पुरुषं प्रकृतिं च गुणैः सह ।True understanding frees a person from rebirth.
  25. 13.25ध्यानेनात्मनि पश्यन्ति केचिदात्मानमात्मना ।Different sincere paths can reveal the Self.
  26. 13.26अन्ये त्वेवमजानन्तः श्रुत्वान्येभ्य उपासते ।Even those who begin through hearing and trust can still be carried across the struggle of mortality.
  27. 13.27यावत्सञ्जायते किञ्चित्सत्त्वं स्थावरजङ्गमम् ।All embodied life arises from the meeting of consciousness and nature.
  28. 13.28समं सर्वेषु भूतेषु तिष्ठन्तं परमेश्वरम् ।Real vision sees the same Divine presence in everyone.
  29. 13.29समं पश्यन्हि सर्वत्र समवस्थितमीश्वरम् ।Seeing the Divine everywhere prevents self-destruction and leads upward.
  30. 13.30प्रकृत्यैव च कर्माणि क्रियमाणानि सर्वशः ।The wise understand that action belongs to nature, not to the pure Self.
  31. 13.31यदा भूतपृथग्भावमेकस्थमनुपश्यति ।Seeing unity beneath diversity leads to realization of the whole.
  32. 13.32अनादित्वान्निर्गुणत्वात्परमात्मायमव्ययः ।The supreme Self remains untouched even while present in the body.
  33. 13.33यथा सर्वगतं सौक्ष्म्यादाकाशं नोपलिप्यते ।The Self remains unstained, just as space remains unstained.
  34. 13.34यथा प्रकाशयत्येकः कृत्स्नं लोकमिमं रविः ।The one inner presence illuminates all experience like the sun lights the world.
  35. 13.35क्षेत्रक्षेत्रज्ञयोरेवमन्तरं ज्ञानचक्षुषा ।The chapter ends by saying that wise seeing of self and nature leads to liberation.
